How to Use Our Recipe Converter?

Follow this tutorial to get the most out of our Restaurant Recipe Calculator and learn how to scale your recipes like a professional:

Step 1: Choose Your Scale Mode

At the top of the calculator, select how you want to scale your recipe:

  • By Multiplier: Select this tab to multiply your entire recipe by a specific factor. Use the slider to choose any value from 0.25x to 10x, or click one of the quick preset buttons (0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, up to 10x) for common multipliers – no manual calculation needed.
  • By Servings: Select this tab to convert between specific serving sizes. Enter your original recipe’s serving count and your desired serving count, and the calculator will determine the correct conversion factor automatically. This is perfect for scaling a recipe that serves 4 up to serve 20 for a catering order.

Step 2: Add Your Ingredients

Choose your preferred input method:

1. Quick Paste (Recommended for Speed): Simply paste your ingredient list into the text box, with one ingredient per line. The calculator recognizes common formats including whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. For example:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs

Not sure how it works? Click “Use sample recipe” to load an example ingredient list and see the format in action.

2. Manual Entry: Add ingredients one at a time by entering:

  • Quantity – the precise measurement from your standardized recipe
  • Unit – select from comprehensive commercial kitchen measurements including volume (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces, fluid ounces), weight (pounds, grams, kilograms), metric and imperial units (milliliters, liters), or count for proper recipe conversion
  • Ingredient name – for inventory tracking and recipe standardization

Click “+ Add Line” to add more ingredients, or use the remove button (×) to delete any ingredient row.

Step 3: Name Your Recipe

Enter an optional recipe name to label your conversion for easy identification. This name will appear at the top of your converted recipe card and on printed copies – great for organizing kitchen documentation.

Step 4: Convert and Export

Click the “Convert Recipe” button to process the recipe scaling with professional precision. Your results will appear in a clean recipe card showing:

  • Each ingredient name
  • The original quantity alongside the new converted quantity
  • Smart unit conversions where applicable (e.g., 12 tsp automatically converts to 4 tbsp)

From the results card, you can:

Print your converted recipe in a clean, professionally formatted layout ready for kitchen stations

Copy the recipe to your clipboard for pasting into digital menu systems, inventory management tools, or team communications

Reset the calculator to start a fresh conversion

Recipe Converter Calculator FAQs

Converting a recipe to your desired serving size is simple with our Recipe Converter Calculator. Enter the original recipe yield, input your desired number of servings, add all ingredients, and click "Calculate Converted Recipe." The calculator automatically adjusts all ingredient quantities proportionally, maintaining the recipe's balance and flavor profile. This eliminates manual calculations and ensures consistent results for your restaurant's dishes, whether scaling up for a large catering event or down for smaller service periods.

The formula for converting a recipe is: (Desired Servings ÷ Original Servings) × Original Ingredient Quantity = New Ingredient Quantity. For example, if your house sauce recipe serves 25 but you need to serve 100, you would multiply each ingredient by 4 (100 ÷ 25 = 4). Our calculator handles this automatically and intelligently formats measurements for kitchen use, including appropriate rounding and fraction conversions for easier implementation by your kitchen staff.

To calculate cost per serving, divide the total recipe cost by the number of servings. First, determine the cost of each ingredient used in the recipe by calculating (Amount Used ÷ Package Size) × Package Cost. Add all ingredient costs to find the total recipe cost, then divide by the number of servings. While our Recipe Converter Calculator focuses on scaling quantities, the converted recipe provides the exact amounts needed, which you can use with your inventory costs to determine accurate food costs for different serving sizes. For comprehensive food cost analysis, we recommend using our Recipe Cost Calculator.

Converting a recipe for more servings is straightforward with our tool. Input your original recipe yields and the larger number of servings needed, then add all ingredients with their quantities and units. The calculator will proportionally increase all measurements while maintaining the proper ratios. This ensures quality and consistency when scaling up for banquets, catering events, or busy service periods. The calculator also handles measurement conversions intelligently, so your kitchen staff receives clear, workable quantities.

Converting between different measurement units in recipes requires understanding equivalencies between volume and weight measurements. Our Recipe Converter Calculator simplifies this process by allowing you to select the appropriate unit for each ingredient (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces, pounds, grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters, or count). When scaling a recipe, the calculator maintains these units in the conversion, presenting measurements in familiar formats for your kitchen staff. This eliminates confusion and ensures precise results when executing recipes across multiple locations or with different team members.
